Patron Lady Claire Macdonald

It is an honour to be Patron of Scottish Food & Drink Fortnight and something I’m immensely proud of.  The fortnight is a fantastic event in the Scottish calendar and is fundamental in raising the awareness of top quality produce.  Scotland arguably has one of the most diverse and interesting larders in the world.  We are so fortunate to have an enormous variety of excellent produce from fish and shellfish coming out of our crystal clear seas, lochs and rivers to vegetables and soft fruits as well as artisan cows, goats and sheep milk cheeses which all feed on our wonderfully rich landscape.  We are also fortunate enough to be able to illustrate the traditional production methods from some unique bakeries and smokeries.  Raising the awareness of all this is what Scottish Food & Drink Fortnight is all about.  In addition promoting the connection between Scotland’s Garden Scheme and Scottish Food & Drink Fortnight is a personal pleasure for me.  Both are the result of our rich landscape, waters and soils and they are as important as each other to promote to the rest of the world.  I am in no doubt that 2010 will be even more successful than 2009.

Scotland Food & Drink was established with the sole purpose of building Scotland’s reputation as a ‘Land of Food and Drink’. The Scottish Food & Drink Fortnight plays a key role in doing this so we are delighted to have custodianship of the initiative for the second consecutive year.

“Scottish produce has a strong reputation at home and abroad and this needs to be harnessed to secure an economically successful food and drink industry which is sustainable over the long term. The Fortnight will be a highlight of the Year of Food & Drink celebrations and with growing support from the industry and the Public 2010 will be the best yet”

National Food & Drink Policy

Sales of Scottish produce across Great Britain have increased by 21% in two years, proof that Scotland's food and drink industry has the right ingredients for success.

The figures were revealed as an ambitious plan to strengthen Scotland's food and drink sector was launched at the Royal Highland Show in June 2009.

Rural Affairs and Environment Secretary Richard Lochhead unveiled 'Recipe for Success', the next steps in Scotland's first-ever national food and drink policy, following detailed input from some of the nation's most respected experts.

The policy includes:
  • Action to get more Scottish food onto menus in hotels, restaurants, cafes and pubs, with clear advice on where food has come from
  • Supporting more farmers' markets, farm shops and local food initiatives
  • A new strategy for the food and drink sector to increase sales by a third to £10bn by 2017
  • A new charter with supermarkets who have committed to playing their part in taking forward the national food and drink policy
  • Promoting a better understanding of the food chain amongst  young people
  • Another £3.3m from the Food Processing and Marketing Grants Scheme for 16 new projects, taking the number of jobs created and safeguarded by the scheme to over 3,000 in less than a year, attracting additional investment of £70m
Paul McLaughlin, chief executive of Scotland Food & Drink, said:

"We fully support the next steps in Scotland's national food and drink policy. Economic growth in this sector is vital to Scotland's recovery from recession and integral to improvement of the nation's public health and environmental sustainability.

With the steadfast dedication of the industry and support of the Scottish Government and enterprise agencies, Scotland Food & Drink is at the forefront to ensure progress is made.

We remain committed to our ambitious £10 billion objective and Scottish Food & Drink Fortnight is a vital tool in helping us to achieve this".
