One Planet Picnic
After the huge success of the 'One Planet Picnic' project and
competition last year, Eco School's Scotland are delighted to
annouce the return of the event in 2012. The Eco-Schools
Scotland 'One Planet Picnic' is a fortnight of sustainable picnics
to be held by schools between the 10th -
21st September 2012 to celebrate the harvest and to
learn about Scottish foods. The ingredients for picnics are
to include local, seasonal or ethically sourced produce and both
food wrapping and serving designed to minimise waste. In 2011, the
One Planet Picnic project inspired participation from at least 5000
pupils in schools across every Scottish region. Many schools
contacted parents, local businesses and organisations in the wider
community as part of their One Planet Picnic 2011, so the learning
and fun was shared between different generations and areas of the
community.
For the 2012 picnic, Eco Schools Scotland have launched a
competition encouraging Nursery, Primary and Secondary school
pupils to design their own sustainable picnic recipe for the One
Planet Picnic competition. Prizes have been generously
donated by food businesses and organisations and include a fabulous
chance to visit Tom's Michelin star restaurant, The Kitchin.
Other 'One Planet Picnic' competition prizes, which will support
young people's learning and experience of sustainable food choices,
include visits and resources from Mackie's of Scotland, Masterchef
finalist Fi Bird, Binn Soil Nutrients, Quality Meat Scotland, RSPB
Scotland, Plants with Purpose and Appletreeman, Plan Bee, Iain R.
Spink, and Vegware, Edinburgh's Green Company of the Year 2012.
